Why you should read more in 2018

When was the last time that you read a book?Or do your daily reading habits center around social medias? If you haven’t made a habit of reading regularly, you might be missing out. Books contains valuable knowledge, and essentially help us get ahead in business, so why don’t we read more? Warren Buffett spends 80% of his day reading. Bill Gates reads for an hour every night before bed. Mark Cuban states that he is willing to read more than anyone else, and credits part of his success to that. Furthermore, reading has shown to add tons of benefits, and just a few of them are listed here.

  1. Mentally Stimulating

By stimulating yourself mentally, you can slow the progress of (or possibly even prevent) Alzheimer’s and Dementia. It kinda make sense that the brain, just like all other muscle, needs to be kept active and engaged to prevent it from losing power. You might have come across the phrase “use it or lose it”? For the mind this is certainly true. If you are into doing puzzles and playing games , they can also be helpful when it comes to cognitive stimulation.

  1. Stress Reducing

A good book can actually let your slip away from stress at work, in your personal relationships, or from other issues in your daily life. So just sit back, and allow yourself to be distracted in the present moment, while letting tension drain away and allowing you to relax.

  1. Knowledge

When reading you can fill your head with tons of new information, which you never know when it might come in handy. However, the more knowledge you have, the better-equipped you are to handle challenges that you meet on your way.  Furthermore, should you end up in dire situations, where you lose just everything – knowledge stays with you. This is why education by most people are considered an investment in yourself.

  1. Vocabulary Expansion

This goes with the above topic. If you like me aren’t an English native, your vocabulary would quickly benefit from being exposed to new words. The words will at some point make their way into your vocabulary, and just like a piano provides you with a wider set of keys to play on, when you are to express yourself. If you are reading business related topics, you will also come across buzzwords that can be essential within that field to know the meaning of.

No matter the topic of your readings, being articulate and well-spoken is an asset in all professions. You will gain a boost to your self-confidence and self-esteem, when you are comfortable speaking with higher-ups. It could in many cases benefit your career.

  1. Memory Improving

When you are reading a book, it contains tons of information, models, statistics, names and such. It’s quite a lot to remember, but the brain is amazin. Every new memory you create forges new synapses (brain pathways) and strengthens the existing ones, which assists in short-term memory recall as well as stabilizing moods. How cool is that?
